Released from prison, Ex con Sam Childers (Gerard Butler – 300, LAW ABIDING CITIZEN) returns home to his Wife Lynn (Michelle Monaghan – SOURCE CODE, GONE BABY GONE) and their young daughter in the same frame of mind as he did when he entered prison. Refusing to understand why his wife has turned to god in his absence Sam goes his local bar to get a drug fix. But one night Sam’s life changes after he stabs a hitchhiker in the back of his friend’s car. Sickened with himself Lynn helps him to take Jesus into his life and to change his life for the better. The years go by and we see Sam become the man. One night he has a vision to do something good, he takes his skills as a builder to the poverty stricken villages of the Sudan to try and help build homes for the poor.
The horrors he witnesses at the hand of the LRA strike hard with Sam who makes it his mission from god to help the orphaned children of Northern Sudan putting his own life on the line.
MACHINE GUN PREACHER follows the real life story of a man who has my full blown respect after watching this film. Sam Childers, a man who was the lowest of the low, has shown that even criminals and junkies can get a second chance. The film is very hard hitting, obviously showing the true horrors of what is still going down in Sudan and even for someone like me who doesn’t believe in God in got me thinking that there are still some good people in the world.
Butler FINALLY has been given a role as of late which gets him back in the action/drama genre and with COROLANAUS hitting the DVD shops soon I am hoping this is a sign of even better things to come. Direction was delicately handled and the soundtrack for this film was breathtakingly good which make you feel more and more engrossed by the film.
MACHINE GUN PREACHER is a fantastic tale of one Good Samaritan who has taken it upon himself to make a difference. It is both heart warming and shocking and if you like your modern wartime films this is a good choice for you. Butler gives a fantastic performance which should be respected by every real film fan out there.
